Errant hotels in Margao served notices

Margao: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has taken strong cognizance of the absence of any waste disposal arrangements by city-based hotels and restaurants.

The MMC had recently sent notices to at least three hotels in the city to stop discharge of waste water into the roadside public drains forthwith, failing which action would be taken against them.

However, as the hotels failed to take any corrective measures thereby ignoring the notices, the council has now decided to revoke their trade licences. Orders in that regard have already been signed by MMC's chief officer, Agnelo Fernandes, and those will be issued to the errant hotels soon, it is learnt. Fernandes, when queried, confirmed the development.

The three hotels in question, sources in the MMC said, have been carrying out their trade without making any necessary waste disposal arrangements, thereby violating the conditions outlined in the trade licence.

Sources, however, pointed out that several hotels and restaurants in the town do not even have soak pits for discharge of sewage, resulting in hotel waste overflowing through public drains and manholes.

At least five more hotels are under the radar of the municipality, it is learnt.

Conscientious citizens have now begun questioning how the MMC had given occupancy certificates to the buildings, and trade licences to the hotels and restaurants, that do not have adequate waste disposal facilities. Worse, several restaurants do not even have washrooms, sources said.
